Your skin is your first line of defense. Your lymphatic system is the second. A huge part of your immune system, the lymphatic system is where many of your white blood cells live in lymph nodes removing pathogens before they can infiltrate further.
Manual lymphatic drainage improves the health of your skin and lymphatics. It improves your body’s removal of cellular waste and everyday toxins which reduces the puffiness of the skin, improves its blood supply and elasticity, and reduces the formation of scar tissue. It also boosts the immune system by clearing the way for your white blood cells to move freely and quickly to damaged tissue.
Buildup of fluid and swelling in the tissue slows healing by reducing the blood and oxygen to the area, building up cellular waste like lactic acid. Give your immune system a boost and help your body recover with MLD.
This is especially necessary post surgery when swelling is common and the skin is still broken. Talk to your surgeon to determine the right time to start. Usually 3-14 days post surgery, but many surgeons recommend MLD as soon as one day post surgery.
After initial treatments for swelling usually 5-10 in the first two weeks depending on your surgeon’s recommendations, ongoing therapy can reduce the scar tissue and increase elasticity in your skin around incisions.
